Lieber Jonny, ich kenne Dich als Maler, so habe ich Dich kennen gelernt. Du malst immer noch, oder?

Immer noch, natürlich. Kreativität ist für mich das A und O. In jeglicher Form. Alles, womit ich mich ausdrücken kann, womit ich meine Ideen umsetzen kann, ist meine Welt.

Dear Jonny, I know you as a painter, that’s how I got to know you. You still paint, right?

Still, of course. Creativity is the alpha and omega for me. In any form. Everything I can express myself with to implement my ideas is my world.

Machst Du das schon Dein Leben lang?

Ich habe 2009 mit der Malerei begonnen und bin über meine erste Leidenschaft, dem Tanz, zum Malen gekommen.

Have you been doing this all your life?

I started painting in 2009 and came to paint about my first passion, dance.

Tango, nicht wahr?

1978 habe ich mit Rock ’n’ Roll und Boogie Woogie angefangen. Das waren Zeiten, in denen ich noch Haare auf dem Kopf hatte und eine Elvis Tolle trug. Das ergänzte ich vor 20 Jahren mit Standard und Lateinamerikanischen Tänzen. Vor acht Jahren habe ich den Tango argentino für mich entdeckt. Darüber bin ich dann zur Malerei, zur bildenden Kunst gekommen. Ich ging an einem argentinischen Restaurant vorbei und sah ein Bild mit der Aufschrift: Heute Tangoabend. Abends bin ich hin und dann immer wieder. Nach einer Weile hatte ich mich mit der Wirtin befreundet. Sie war Künstlerin und hatte ihr Restaurant natürlich mit ihren Werken ausgestattet. Irgendwann, bei einem Gespräch, blickte sie mir tief in die Augen und sagte: Mal doch auch. Ich antwortete, dass ich gar nicht malen könne aber sie meinte, ich könne das. Ich überlegte, was ich machen sollte – ich bin ja völlig unbeleckt ans Malen heran gegangen – bin ja überhaupt in allen Dingen Autodidakt. Ich kaufte mir also eine kleine Leinwand, ein paar Farben und Pinsel und überlegte. Ich erinnerte mich irgendwo mal gehört zu haben, ein Selbstporträt sei das Schwierigste überhaupt. Also entschied ich mich dazu und dachte, wenn ich mir ähnlich sehe, dann bleibe ich bei der Malerei. Malen und Tanzen sind für mich zwei Seiten derselben Medaille. Wenn ich male, habe ich meine Leinwand, meine Farben, die Pinsel und damit erschaffe ich ein Bild. Wenn ich tanze habe ich anstatt der Leinwand das Parkett, statt der Farben die Musik und statt des Pinsels meinen Körper und ich erschaffe auch ein Bild, ein temporäres. Einen guten Tänzer erkennt man daran, dass er nicht steril irgendwelche Schrittfolgen tut, sondern sich in die Musik fallen läßt und ihr ein Bild gibt.

Tango, right?

In 1978 I started with Rock ’n‘ Roll and Boogie Woogie. Those were times when I still had hair on my head and wore an Elvis Tolle. I supplemented that with standard and Latin American dances 20 years ago. Eight years ago, I discovered the Tango argentino for myself. Then I came to painting, to visual arts. I passed an Argentine restaurant and saw a picture saying: Tango evening today. In the evening I go there and then again and again. After a while I became friends with the landlady. She was an artist and of course had equipped her restaurant with her works. At some point, during a conversation, she looked deep into my eyes and said: Yes, too. I answered that I could not paint at all but she said I could do that. I wondered what I should do – I went to painting unbelievably – I am self-taught in all things. So I bought a small canvas, a few colors and brushes and thought. I remember somewhere to have heard, a self-portrait is the hardest thing ever. So I decided to do that and thought that if I looked like me, then I would stay with the painting. Painting and dancing are for me two sides of the same coin. When I paint, I have my canvas, my colors, the brushes and with that I create a picture. When I dance, instead of the canvas I have the parquet, instead of the colors the music and instead of the brush my body and I also create a picture, a temporary one. A good dancer can be recognized by the fact that he is not sterile doing any step sequences, but lets himself fall into the music and gives her a picture.

 

Wie kam es dann zum Steampunk?

Das war auch eine lustige Geschichte. Ich bin in vielen Künstlergruppen und in der einen gab es mal eine Veranstaltung von einem Künstlerkollegen, Norbert Gladis aus Meissen. Er lud mich zu einem Künstler Lagerfeuer Wochenende an der Ostsee ein. Als ich ihn das erste Mal traf, fand ich keinen Freund, sondern einen Bruder. Mein neuer Bruder war schon recht lange in der Steampunk Szene. Er ist surrealer Maler, so fantastisch, das werde ich in meinem ganzes Leben nicht erreichen können, und er infizierte mich mit dem Steampunk Virus. Als ich die Szene näher kennen lernte, stellte ich fest, dass die Leute sehr liebenswürdig, sehr offen, sehr frei und sehr hilfsbereit sind.

Steampunker sind Macher. Wir machen alles und wir haben drei Mal Spass. Das erste Mal, wenn man sich in Second Hand Läden oder auf  Trödelmärkten herumtreibt um die Utensilien zusammen zu suchen – Messingteile, alte Lederkoffer, Holzkisten – den zweiten Spass hat man, wenn man die Dinge zusammenfügt und eine überdimensionierte Steampunk Kreation daraus wird, und den dritten Spass hat man dann bei den Treffen, wenn man das ganze vor- und ausführen kann.

How did you get steampunk?

That was also a funny story. I’m in many artist groups and in one of them there was an event by an artist colleague, Norbert Gladis from Meissen. He invited me to an artist campfire weekend on the Baltic Sea. When I met him for the first time, I did not find a friend, but a brother. My new brother has been in the steampunk scene for a long time. He’s a surreal painter, so amazing, I will not be able to do that in my life, and he infected me with the Steampunk virus. As I got to know the scene, I found that people are very gracious, very open, very free and very helpful.

Steampunkers are doers. We do everything and we have three fun times. The first time you go shopping in second-hand stores or flea markets to find the things you need – brass parts, old leather cases, wooden crates – the second fun is to put things together and become an oversized steampunk creation, and so on The third fun you have at the meetings, if you can do it all.

Siehst Du privat auch immer so aus?

Nein, ich habe ja auch einen Brotjob. In der Kunst hat sich seit den Zeiten von Wilhelm Busch wenig geändert der mal gesagt hat: Oft trifft man wen der Bilder malt. Viel seltener den, der sie bezahlt. Um mein Leben und meine Freuden zu finanzieren, brauche ich einen Job. Das heißt drei Tage Brotjob, vier Tage Kunst. Eine gute Balance. Ich schaue also nicht immer so aus. Steampunker, im viktorianischen Zeitalter angesiedelt, sind Zeitreisende. Die können nicht immer extravagant sein, sondern müssen auch mal untertauchen. Bei einer Rock n‘ Roll-Veranstaltung trage ich dann auch wieder gerne mal Ringelsocken und Krempeljeans.

Do you always look that way privately?

No, I also have a bread job. In the arts little has changed since the times of Wilhelm Busch, who once said: Often you meet who paints the pictures. Much less often he who pays them. To finance my life and my joys, I need a job. That means three days of bread, four days of art. A good balance. So I do not always look that way. Steampunkers, settled in the Victorian era, are time travelers. They can not always be extravagant, they also have to go underground. At a rock n ‚roll event, I like to wear ring socks and clutter jeans.

Aber die Elvis Tolle hast Du nicht mehr…

Nein, die ist mir leider abhanden gekommen, erblich bedingt. Vater Glatze, Großvater Glatze, was soll da bei mir übrig bleiben?

But you do not have the Elvis Tolle anymore …

No, unfortunately I lost it, hereditary. Father bald, grandfather bald, what’s left for me?

Steht Dir aber sehr gut.

Ja, man kann Schiebermützen aufsetzen. Die passen sowohl zum Steampunk als auch zu den 50iger Jahren. Ich habe das Glück, ein Mützengesicht zu haben, die richtige Kopfform.

But it fits you well.

Yes, you can put on slider caps. They are suitable for the steampunk as well as the 50s. I’m lucky enough to have a cap face, the right head shape.

 

Steampunk ist in England entstanden?

In den 80iger Jahren in England und den USA. Es gab zunächst eine Stilrichtung, die sich Cyberpunk nannten, Endzeitgeschichten à la Mad Max. Daraus entwickelte sich der Steampunk, der nicht diese Endzeitstimmung hat, sondern eher viktorianisch, sehr verspielt, sehr vielfältig daherkommt. Man spielt eigentlich Crossplay, stellt einen Charakter aus einem Film oder einem Roman dar. Da 1900 auf der ganzen Welt stattfand, kann ich mich sowohl als Cowboy, als Chinese oder Araber kleiden, ebenso, wie ich die Berufe der Zeit verkörpern kann, Luftschifffahrtskapitän, Detektiv, Dampfmaschinenmaschinist, Graf mit Frack und Zylinder, es gibt keine Grenzen.

Steampunk originated in England?

In the 80’s in England and the USA. There was first a style called Cyberpunk, end-time stories à la Mad Max. From this developed the steampunk, who does not have this end-time mood, but rather Victorian, very playful, very diverse comes along. You’re actually playing Crossplay, a character from a movie or a novel. Since 1900, around the world, I can dress as a cowboy, a Chinese or an Arab, as well as I can personify the jobs of the time, Aviation captain, Detective, steam engine operator, count with tailcoat and cylinder, there are no limits.

Gibt es für Dich einen Schwerpunkt?

Dazu bin ich zu wandelbar. Ich mache es der Stimmung und, wie heute, dem Wetter entsprechend. Heute ist eher der orientalische Look angesagt. Ich bin in meinen Outfits nicht festgelegt. Allerdings habe ich den Anspruch, bei jeder Veranstaltung etwas anders aufzutreten, nicht zweimal das Gleiche. Wenn ein Outfit oder eine Gerätschaft fertig ist, dann möchte ich ja gleich wieder etwas neues erschaffen.

Is there a focus for you?

I am too changeable for that. I do it the mood and, as today, according to the weather. Today, the oriental look is more in demand. I’m not set in my outfits. However, I claim to be different at each event, not twice the same. If an outfit or a piece of equipment is ready, then I would like to create something new again.

Was machst Du dann mit den Sachen?

Momentan liegt und steht vieles bei mir zu Hause und ich beginne langsam, mich von einigen Dingen zu trennen. Ich hatte gerade ein Gespräch mit einer sehr netten Dame geführt, die hier in Berlin ein Bastelgeschäft hat und gerne ein paar Sachen von mir in Kommission nehmen möchte. Dann habe ich wieder Geld für neue Materialien und wieder Platz geschafft. Mir fällt es nicht schwer, mich von Dingen zu trennen, weil der Schaffensprozess das eigentlich Schöne ist. Wenn etwas fertig ist, egal ob ein Bild oder ein Kästchen, dann ist es für mich zwar immer noch schön, aber hat natürlich nicht mehr den Reiz des Machens.

What are you doing with the stuff then?

At the moment a lot of things are at home and I am slowly starting to separate from a few things. I had just had a conversation with a very nice lady who has a craft shop here in Berlin and would like to take a few things from me on commission. Then I made money again for new materials and space again. It is not difficult for me to separate myself from things, because the creative process is actually beautiful. If something is finished, whether a picture or a box, then it is still beautiful for me, but of course no longer has the charm of doing.

Bei der Kunst ist der Schaffensprozess ja immer der schönste Teil, man arbeitet auf einen Punkt hin und dann kommt die Leere. Wirkt denn der Steampunk auch in Deine Malerei ein?

Teilweise. Wenn ich Bilder male, dann bewegen mich zum Teil andere Dinge, viel politischer. Im letzten Jahr hatte ich eine Ausstellung namens Tick Tack Toe – Krieg und Terror kennen keine Gewinner. Es ging um Gewalt jeglicher Art. Ob häusliche Gewalt oder die brutale Gewalt des Krieges, Terror, jede Art von Gewalt ist mir ein Greuel. Mit solchen Themen beschäftige ich mich in meiner Malerei. Allerdings habe ich auch schon drei Steampunk Bilder gemalt, weil es mich einfach mal gereizt hat. Doch da gibt es ganz viele Künstler, die so viel besser sind, dass ich mich nicht mit ihnen messen will. In meinen Werken ist die Aussage immens wichtig.

In the art, the creative process is always the most beautiful part, you work towards a point and then comes the void. Does the steampunk also influence your painting?

Partially. When I paint pictures, sometimes other things move me, much more politically. Last year, I had an exhibition called Tick Tack Toe – War and Terror know no winners. It was about violence of any kind. Whether domestic violence or the brutal force of war, terror, any kind of violence is an abomination to me. I deal with such topics in my painting. However, I have already painted three Steampunk pictures, because it just irritated me. But there are many artists who are so much better that I do not want to compete with them. In my works, the statement is immensely important.

Und hast Du in der nächsten Zeit eine Ausstellung?

Ich habe jetzt eine Ausstellung gemeinsam mit einigen Freunden der Berliner Kunstwand. Das ist ein Zusammenschluss bildender Künstler, die sich zur Aufgabe gemacht hat, ihre Kunst in den öffentlichen Raum zu tragen. Jeder Künstler hat ein leicht transportables Modul, Aluschienen an der Seite und in der Mitte vier Styroporplatten, wie man sie im Baumarkt kaufen kann. Die werden grundiert und jeder Künstler kann sich darauf verewigen, in welcher Form auch immer. Es gibt keinerlei Vorschriften außer, es darf nicht rechtsradikal und nicht pornografisch sein. Letzteres, weil wir ja im öffentlichen Raum sind. Ein Modul ist einen Meter breit, zwei Meter hoch. Also jeder hat vier Quadratmeter Fläche für seine Kunst, schreibt seine Webseite in eine Ecke, weil es ja wie eine Visitenkarte ist und dann werden sie mit einem System verknüpft, ähnlich wie ein Paravent aufgestellt und je mehr Künstler teilnehmen, desto länger ist die Kunstwand. Ein bisschen wie die Eastside Galery, nur mobil. Als Künstler kann man sich kaum Ausstellungen in Galerien leisten. Ausnahmen gibt es, wie zum Beispiel die Ausstellung, die ich jetzt am 23. August im Gemeinschaftshaus Gropiusstadt vor mir habe. Aber meistens muss man Geld mitbringen. Man muss immer in Vorleistung gehen und ob etwas verkauft wird ist fraglich. In Berlin wird zwar viel gemacht, aber wenig gekauft. Um dem entgegen zu wirken, haben wir die Berliner Kunstwand. Da sieht man uns bei Festen, beispielsweise dem Pankower Kunstfest. Wir machen aber auch flashmobartige Aktionen. Wir nennen das jedoch Kunstblitze, weil wir das englische Wort nicht mögen. Man verabredet sich sonntags vor dem Brandenburger Tor und steht da, bis die Polizei einen verscheucht. Die Berliner Kunstwand ist für Künstler eine Möglichkeit, ihre Werke zu zeigen, ohne dass Kosten entstehen.

And do you have an exhibition in the near future?

I now have an exhibition together with some friends of the Berlin Art Wall. This is an association of visual artists who have set themselves the task of carrying their art into public space. Each artist has an easily transportable module, aluminum rails on the side and in the middle of four Styrofoam plates, as you can buy in the hardware store. They are primed and every artist can perpetuate it, in whatever form. There are no rules except, it must not be right-wing radical and not pornographic. The latter, because we are in public space. One module is one meter wide, two meters high. So everyone has four square feet of space for his art, writing his website in a corner, because it’s like a business card and then they are linked to a system similar to a screen set up and the more artists participate, the longer the art wall is. A bit like the Eastside Galery, just mobile. As an artist you can hardly afford exhibitions in galleries. There are exceptions, such as the exhibition which I now have on August 23 at Gropiusstadt Community House. But most of the time you have to bring money. You always have to go in advance and if something is sold is questionable. In Berlin, a lot is done, but little is bought. To counteract this, we have the Berlin art wall. You can see us at festivals, for example the Pankow Art Festival. But we also do flash mob action. However, we call this flash of art because we do not like the English word. People meet on Sundays in front of the Brandenburg Gate and stand there until the police chase you away. The Berlin Art Wall is a way for artists to show their works without incurring any costs.

Sind die einzelnen Module käuflich zu erwerben?

Natürlich. Der Gründer der Berliner Kunstwand, der Künstler Knuzen, der sich das Ganze erdacht hat und patentieren ließ, bereitet die Module für die Künstler vor, die sie verkaufen können. Jeder ist aber auch aufgerufen, selbst aktiv zu werden. Es gibt keine Leitung der man folgt, jeder hat die Möglichkeit seine Ideen einzubringen.

Are the individual modules available for purchase?

Naturally. The founder of the Berlin art wall, the artist Knuzen, who conceived and patented the whole thing, prepares the modules for the artists who can sell them. Everyone is also called to become active themselves. There is no leadership to follow, everyone has the opportunity to contribute their ideas.

Denkst Du, dass Du der Steampunk Szene erhalten bleibst?

Auf jeden Fall. Die ist so vielfältig, die hat mich so gepackt. Dem Rock n‘ Roll bin ich ja auch noch treu – wenn mich etwas begeistert, dann bleibe ich auch dabei.

Do you think that you will stay in the steampunk scene?

In any case. It is so diverse, it has packed me. I’m still loyal to Rock ’n‘ Roll – if I’m thrilled, then I stay with it.
