Meine Liebe, wenn man Dich so sieht, wie ich Dich des öfteren gesehen habe, glaubt man zwar an Theater, aber nicht, dass Du dort im technischen Bereich tätig bist.

Ja, ich habe mich schon immer mit Technik beschäftigt. Im Maxim Gorki Theater habe ich auch in der Technik gearbeitet und dort die Organisation gemacht. Als ich dann aus der DDR ausgereist war, hatte ich zunächst in einer Textilfirma gearbeitet, weil ich erst einmal nichts am Theater gefunden hatte. Dann sah ich eine Anzeige von der Schaubühne und seitdem bin ich dort. Ich bin so zu sagen die rechte Hand des technischen Direktors.

My love, when you see you as I have often seen you, you believe in theater, but not that you are working there in the technical field.

Yes, I have always dealt with technology. In the Maxim Gorki Theater, I also worked in technology and did the organization there. When I left East Germany, I first worked in a textile company because I had not found anything in the theater. Then I saw an ad from the Schaubühne and since then I’m there. I am, so to speak, the right hand of the technical director.

Hattest Du jemals das Bestreben auf der Bühne zu sein?

Nein, überhaupt nicht. Es macht mir Spaß in der Technik zu arbeiten. Ich mag Technik, ich liebe es zu wissen, auch bei meinem Auto oder Videorekorder, wo etwas ist und wie es funktioniert, schon immer. Als Kind habe ich kaum mit Puppen gespielt, aber immer mit Autos. Ich bin als Frau eben vielschichtig.

Have you ever wanted to be on stage?

No not at all. I enjoy working in technology. I like technology, I love to know, even with my car or VCR, where something is and how it works, always. As a kid, I barely played with dolls, but always with cars. As a woman, I am very complex.

Seit wann modelst Du?

Schon sehr lange. Früher habe ich viel für Magazine über die Modeagenturen, die es im Osten gab gearbeitet. Es gab zwar nicht sehr viele, aber immerhin. Und das ist schon sehr lange her, ich denke, dass ich in den 80iger Jahren damit begonnen habe.

Since when do you model?

For a long time. I used to work a lot for magazines about the fashion agencies that existed in the East. There were not many, but at least. And that was a very long time ago, I think that I started in the 80s.

Modeln ist ja normalerweise zeitlich begrenzt, altersmäßig, aber Du bist ja noch groß im Geschäft.

Ich werde tatsächlich sehr oft gefragt, dann freue ich mich.

Modeling is usually limited in time, age, but you’re still big in the business.

I am actually asked very often, then I am pleased.

Arbeitest Du mit einer Agentur?

Nicht mehr. Ich bin zwar in der ein oder anderen Agentur vertreten, doch da sind eher Schauspieler gefragt.

Do you work with an agency?

No more. Although I am represented in one or the other agency, but rather actors are in demand.

Hattest Du schon immer ein Faible für außergewöhnliche Sachen?

Schon immer.

Have you always had a weakness for extraordinary things?

Always.

Das war in der DDR sicherlich schwierig.

Ja, aber da konnte man das auch irgendwie arrangieren. Ich kannte auch immer Leute, die etwas außergewöhnlicher waren, man traf sich, tauschte Sachen miteinander aus – nicht nur Kleidung, sondern auch Gedanken. Da ich ja auch dort im Theater gearbeitet hatte, gab es auch andere Möglichkeiten sich auszuleben. Als Kind habe ich schon viel gezeichnet und Kleidung entworfen.

Damals hatte ich getanzt und meine Tanzkleider selber kreiert.

That was certainly difficult in the GDR.

Yes, but there you could somehow arrange that. I also always knew people who were a bit more extraordinary, they met and exchanged things – not just clothes, but also thoughts. Since I had also worked there in the theater, there were other ways to live out. As a kid I have already drawn a lot and designed clothes.

At that time, I danced and created my own dance dresses.

Hattest Du mal die Idee Modedesignerin zu werden?

Hatte ich. Aber mein Vater war strikt dagegen. Er verlangte, dass ich was „Ordentliches“ lernte. Ich machte Abitur und musste dann Industriekauffrau werden. Aber das ist egal, das ist jetzt vorbei und damals wurde es halt so gehandhabt, dass man sich als Tochter wenig widersetzen durfte.

Did you have the idea to become a fashion designer?

I had. But my dad was against it. He demanded that I learn something „decent“. I graduated from high school and then had to become an industrial clerk. But that does not matter, that’s over now and then it was just handled so that you could oppose little as a daughter.

Hattest Du in dieser Zeit sehr gelitten?

Was heißt gelitten? Es hat mir wenig Spaß gemacht, es hat mich natürlich nicht so erfüllt, als wenn ich selbst etwas hätte kreieren können.

Did you suffer a lot during this time?

What does suffered? It was not much fun for me, of course it did not fill me as if I could have created something myself.

Das technische Verständnis hast Du Dir also selbst angeeignet?

Ich bin jetzt 31 Jahre am Theater. Aber meine Arbeit besteht ja auch größtenteils aus Organisation, also Gastspielvorbereitungen, Transporte, die Versicherungen, die Außenwirtschaftsdokumente erstellen, das ist mein Aufgabenbereich. Die Bühnentechnik der Schaubühne ist natürlich sehr interessant, aber damit habe ich nichts zu tun.

So you have acquired the technical understanding yourself?

I am now at the theater for 31 years. But most of my work also consists of organization, ie guest performance preparations, transport, the insurance, the foreign trade documents, that’s my job. The stage technology of the Schaubühne is of course very interesting, but I have nothing to do with it.

Wie stellst Du Dir die Zeit vor, in der Du nicht mehr arbeiten wirst?

Das ein oder andere mal habe ich daran gedacht, dass ich bestimmt wieder mehr zeichnen werde, ich will auf jeden Fall wieder anfangen, mehr Zeit dafür verwenden und mal sehen, was mich dann noch so alles erwartet. Möglicherweise mache ich noch was im Design, das könnte ich mir vorstellen. Allerdings wartet meine Tochter in den USA auch darauf, dass ich mal ein wenig länger bei ihr bleibe.

How do you imagine the time when you will not work anymore?

On one occasion or another I thought that I would definitely draw more, I definitely want to start again, spend more time and see what else awaits me. Maybe I’ll do something else in design, I could imagine. However, my daughter in the US is also waiting for me to stay with her a little longer.

Da warst Du doch gerade, nicht wahr?

Genau. Meine Tochter lebt in Washington, aber wir haben eine kleine Tour gemacht. Washington und Chicago. Meistens bleiben wir drei Wochen bei meiner Tochter und eine Woche reisen wir an einen anderen Ort. Ich mag es, etwas länger an einem Ort zu bleiben, Land und Leute kennen zu lernen. Ich steige gerne etwas intensiver ein, möchte gerne ein Feeling für den Ort bekommen, an dem ich gerade bin, das normale Leben spüren. In Chicago waren wir in einem Blues Club und das war herrlich!

You were there, right?

Exactly. My daughter lives in Washington, but we did a little tour. Washington and Chicago. Mostly we stay with my daughter for three weeks and one week we travel to another place. I like to stay in one place for a bit longer, to get to know the country and its people. I like to get a bit more intense, would like to get a feel for the place I’m in, feel normal life. In Chicago we were in a blues club and that was lovely!

Zeichnest Du speziell Mode?

Das würde ich auch gerne machen, aber ich zeichne auch gerne Landschaften, ich liebe schöne, alte Bäume.

Do you specialize in fashion?

I would also like to do that, but I also like to draw landscapes, I love beautiful, old trees.

Das Umland von Washington D.C. ist ja auch sehr malerisch.

Ja, Virginia ist sehr schön, dort kann man gut leben.

Yes, Virginia is very beautiful, there you can live well.

Ich habe ja auch eine Weile dort in der Gegend gewohnt, auf einer Insel in der Nähe von Boston, auf Nantucket. Daher kenne ich den Lebensstil der Amerikaner der, wohl gemerkt, nicht ganz der meine ist.

Meiner auch nicht, aber ich habe die Leute als sehr freundlich empfunden. Die Dienstleistungen sind wesentlich besser. Das liegt daran, dass die Menschen dort kein Gehalt bekommen, sondern nur von ihren Trinkgeldern leben müssen. Das ist schrecklich. Die Trinkgelder sind den Kunden regelrecht vorgeschrieben, mindestens 15 bis 20 Prozent muss man geben. Nach wie vor ist es für die Leute nicht leicht davon zu leben, aber deshalb sind sie so freundlich.

I also lived there for a while, on an island near Boston, on Nantucket. Therefore, I know the lifestyle of Americans who, mind you, is not quite mine.

Not mine either, but I found the people to be very friendly. The services are much better. This is because people do not receive salary there, but only have to live off their tips. That’s awful. The tips are literally prescribed to the customer, at least 15 to 20 percent you have to give. It is still not easy for people to live off, but that’s why they are so friendly.

Wie würdest Du Deinen Stil bezeichnen?

Ich sehe mich als sportlich elegant. Ich trage auch gerne Shorts und T-Shirt. Auf der Arbeit muss ich das ohnehin, wenn es z.B. Bauabnahmen gibt, da kann ich nicht in einem Kleid stehen. Da braucht es festeres Schuhwerk und eine Hose.

How would you describe your style?

I see myself as sporty elegant. I also like to wear shorts and T-shirts. At work, I have to do that anyway, if it’s I can not stand in a dress. It needs stiffer footwear and pants.

Wie hast Du den Kreis um die Designerin Monella Caspar kennen gelernt?

Auf einer Veranstaltung. So wie wir uns kennen gelernt haben. Ich fand sie außergewöhnlich. Man sieht sich, lächelt sich an und dann kommt man ins Gespräch. Wenn ich interessante Menschen sehe, dann möchte ich mehr als Guten Tag sagen. Ich liebe es mich mit anderen Menschen auszutauschen, die etwas besonderes an sich haben. Natürlich ist jeder Mensch besonders, aber da gibt es eben die, die eine gewisse Aura ausstrahlen.

How did you get to know the circle around the designer Monella Caspar?

At an event. The way we met. I found her extraordinary. You look at each other, smile at each other and then you start talking. When I see interesting people, I want to say more than hello. I love to interact with other people who have something special about them. Of course, every human is special, but there are those who radiate a certain aura.

Abschließend noch eine Frage. Was wäre Dein Lebenstraum? Was würdest Du Dir gerne noch erfüllen?

Darüber habe ich noch gar nicht nachgedacht. Ich freue mich darauf, mit meinem Mann längere Zeit zu reisen, nicht nur einen Monat lang. Oder mal eine Zeit lang woanders leben. Das reicht mir völlig aus.

Finally a question. What would be your life’s dream? What would you like to fulfill?

I have not thought about that yet. I’m looking forward to traveling with my husband for a long time, not just a month. Or live somewhere else for a while. That’s enough for me.
