Du bist Fotograf. War es immer Dein Traum eine Akademie zu haben?

Die Akademie war kein Traum. Das hatte sich so entwickelt, worüber ich sehr happy bin.

You are a photographer. Was it always your dream to have an academy?

The academy was not a dream. It had developed so that I am very happy.

Wo würdest Du als Fotograf Deine Schwerpunkte sehen?

Nach wie vor bei Fashion & Beauty.

Where would you as a photographer see your focal points?

Still at Fashion & Beauty.

Arbeitest Du denn noch ausserhalb der Akademie in diesem Bereich?

Das tue ich. Ich habe eine Homepage, wo man mit einem Passwort Zugriff auf meine Arbeiten erhält. Ich gehöre nicht zu der Sorte Fotografen, die alles auf der Seite sichtbar machen. Wer wirklich Interesse hat, kann dann mit dem Passwort auf die entsprechende Seite kommen und sich meine Arbeiten ansehen, insbesondere Kunden, die ich betreue und wenn jemand detaillierte Informationen haben will, schicke ich die zu.

Are you still working outside the academy in this area?

I do. I have a homepage where you can access my work with a password. I’m not the kind of photographer who makes everything visible on the page. If you are really interested, then you can come to the corresponding page with the password and look at my work, especially customers I look after and if someone wants detailed information, I will send them to you.

Ich möchte aber nochmal auf die Akademie zurückkommen. Wie hatte sich das denn entwickelt?

Die erste Akademie hatte ich gemeinsam mit Helmut Lang gegründet. Die Planung war auch mit Udo Walz zu arbeiten, aber damals hat das nicht so funktioniert, so dass ich Jahre später das ganze alleine gestaltet habe. Irgendwann lernte ich Ayshe kennen und sie ist dann dazu gekommen.

But I want to come back to the academy again. How had that developed?

I founded the first academy together with Helmut Lang. The planning was also to work with Udo Walz, but then it did not work that way, so that years later I did it all on my own. At some point I met Ayshe and she came to it.

Unterrichtsschwerpunkt der Akademie ist Make-Up und Fotografie, richtig?

Genau, diese beiden Komponenten.

The focus of the academy is make-up and photography, right?

Exactly, these two components.

Und der Social Media Bereich kam später hinzu?

Ja einige Bereiche wie Social Media, Permanent Make-Up und Kosmetik. Das sind alles Bereiche die sich aufgrund der Nachfrage entwickelt haben.

And the social media area came later?

Yes some areas like social media, permanent makeup and cosmetics. These are all areas that have developed due to demand.

Planst Du zu expandieren?

Nein, ich plane mehr Ruhe. Das ist mein Plan. Mehr Ruhe, weniger arbeiten, aber dafür konzentrierteres Arbeiten. Früher hat man viel gemacht, versucht, alles abzudecken. Mittlerweile möchte ich weniger abdecken, mich dafür aber auf hochwertigeres konzentrieren.

Are you planning to expand?

No, I plan more peace. That’s my plan. More peace, less work, but more focused work. I used to do a lot of things, trying to cover everything. Meanwhile, I want to cover less, but I focus on higher quality.

Was ist Deine Leidenschaft?

Fotografieren. Und nichts tun.

What is your passion?

Taking photos. And do nothing.

Du hast eine unfassbare Sammlung an Kameras hier. Sind die alle Dein Eigentum?

Ja, alle.

You have an incredible collection of cameras here. Are they all your property?

Yes all.

Wow, da steckt ja auch richtig viel Geld drin.

Mehr als Geld ist es die Arbeit, die da drin steckt. Die zu suchen, zu finden und zu besorgen. Diese Kameras sind wirklich nicht einfach zu finden. Das sind besondere Exemplare.

Wow, there is also a lot of money in it.

More than money, it’s the work that’s in there. The search, to find and to get. These cameras are really not easy to find. These are special copies.

Wann hast Du Dich entschieden Fotograf zu werden?

Relativ früh. Ich habe schon im Kindesalter angefangen zu fotografieren. Mit 16 war mir klar, dass ich nichts anderes machen möchte. Ich habe auch nichts anderes gemacht, habe nichts gelernt. Ich habe auch die Fotografie nicht gelernt, auch nicht studiert, bin ein kompletter Autodidakt. Ich bin einfach meiner Leidenschaft gefolgt und ihr treu geblieben. Ich war ein schlechter Schüler, weil ich im Kopf zu konfus war. Immer wollte ich etwas anderes machen als das,was man mir vorgab. Aus dem Grund war ich in der Schule wenig erfolgreich.

When did you decide to become a photographer?

Relatively early. I started taking pictures when I was a child. At the age of 16, I realized that I did not want to do anything else. I did not do anything else either, did not learn anything. I have not learned photography, nor have I studied photography, I am a complete autodidact. I just followed my passion and stayed true to it. I was a bad student because I was too confused in my mind. I always wanted to do something different from what they pretended to me. That’s why I was unsuccessful at school.

Gab es bei Dir zu Hause einen Aufschrei, weil Du keine Ausbildung machen wolltest?

Klar gab es den. Mein Papa wollte unbedingt, dass ich entweder Arzt oder Anwalt oder irgendwas in dieser Richtung werde. Als ich dann sagte, ich wolle Fotograf werden meinte er, ich hätte nicht alle Tassen im Schrank. Heute sieht er die Sache natürlich anders.

Did you have an outcry at home because you did not want to do any education?

Of course there was that. My dad wanted me to be either a doctor or a lawyer or something like that. When I said I wanted to be a photographer, he said I would not have all the cups in the cupboard. Of course he sees things differently today.

Es ist ja auch nicht so selbstverständlich, dass man als Fotograf erfolgreich wird und davon leben kann.

Es ist schwierig. Als Erfolg definiere ich nicht immer was man beruflich macht, sondern was man menschlich geschafft hat. Wenn man etwas tut, das man liebt, dann kommt der Rest von alleine. Es gibt viele Fotografen die glauben, über die Fotografie ein gewisses Ansehen erlangen zu können, aber es ist nicht wirklich ihre Leidenschaft. Leidenschaft erkenne ich immer dann, wenn man wirklich durch Tiefen geht aber trotzem nicht aufgibt und sich sagt, ich mache das um glücklich zu sein und nicht des Geldes wegen. Man darf dem Geld nicht hinterher rennen. Wenn man aus Leidenschaft arbeitet, kommt immer etwas zurück. So denke ich. Man muss mal schauen, wie sich der Markt entwickelt mit den jungen Fotografen – wir älteren ticken da ein wenig anders.

After all, it is not so obvious that as a photographer you can succeed and live off it.

It’s tough. As a success, I do not always define what you do professionally, but what you have done human. If you do something that you love, then the rest comes on its own. There are many photographers who think they can gain a certain reputation through photography, but it’s not really their passion. I always recognize passion when you really go through depths but do not give up and say that I’m doing this to be happy and not for the money. You can not run after the money. When you work out of passion, something always comes back. I think so. You have to see how the market develops with the young photographers – we older ones tick a little differently.

Ja, der Zeitgeist verändert sich. Wir sprachen da schon mal drüber als wir uns kennen lernten. Heute wollen viele sofort Superstar werden. Sie wollen oftmals nicht den Weg gehen, den man gehen muss, um dann eventuell ein Star zu werden.

Mich hat man immer gefragt: wo willst Du hin mit Deiner Fotografie, was willst Du erreichen? Die Frage habe ich Jahre lang nicht verstanden. Ich folge meinem Glück. Ich will einfach nur glücklich sein und bin da wo ich bin, weil ich glücklich bin mit dem, was ich tue. Ich weiß nicht, wo ich ankommen sollte und verstehe auch nicht, warum man immer irgendwo ankommen muss. Für mich ist angekommen sein, wenn man das tun kann, was einem Spaß macht. Was will ich mehr?

Yes, the zeitgeist is changing. We talked about it when we met. Today many want to become a superstar immediately. Often they do not want to go the way you have to go before you can become a star.

I’ve always been asked: where do you want to go with your photography, what do you want to achieve? I did not understand the question for years. I follow my luck. I just want to be happy and I’m where I am because I’m happy with what I’m doing. I do not know where to get there and I do not understand why you always have to arrive somewhere. For me one has arrived, if he can do that, which is fun. What could I want more?
