Micki Meuser ist Filmkomponist, Musikproduzent und Bassist.

Micki lebt in Berlin und ist Komponist zahlreicher Filmmusiken für Film und Fernsehen, außerdem Produzent einiger bekannter deutscher Künstler. Er ist 1.Vorsitzender der Deutschen Filmkomponistenunion DEFKOM, im Vorstand des DKV und im Aufsichtsrat der GEMA.

Micki lives in Berlin and is a composer of numerous film scores for film and television, as well as producer of some well-known German artists. He is 1st Chairman of the German Film Composers Union DEFKOM, on the board of DKV and on the supervisory board of GEMA.

Ich habe Dich vor vielen Jahren als Musikproduzenten kennen gelernt. Du hattest damals DIE ÄRZTE und INA DETER produziert, warst also on the top. Aber dann hast Du zur Filmmusik gewechselt. Kann man das so sagen?

I met you many years ago as a music producer. You had DIE ÄRZTE and INA DETER produced then, so you were on the top. But then you switched to film music. Was it like that?

Ich komme ja vom instrumentalen Spiel, vom Bass spielen. Bei Dir, liebe Stella, habe ich das ja auch einige Male getan, was mir sehr viel Spass bereitete. Meine Leidenschaft und meine Herausforderung war immer, nicht nur Musik zu interpretieren oder zu produzieren, sondern sie auch zu komponieren. Das hatte natürlich in den jungen Jahren zum Songwriting geführt. In den 80iger Jahren wurden Menschen gesucht, die nicht nur ein Instrument spielten, sondern auch ein wenig über den Tellerrand blickten und sich Gedanken darüber machten, wie ein Song strukturiert ist. Das machte dann den Produzenten aus. Und da hatte ich wohl Glück, INA DETER und sehr erfolgreich IDEAL und eben DIE ÄRZTE produziert zu haben. Ich war sogar der einzige Westproduzent, der in der damaligen DDR produzieren durfte. Ich arbeitete mit der dortigen Top-Band SILLY und produzierte die legendäre Platte Bataillon d’amour. Aber ich produzierte auch mit anderen Musikern, wie den LASSIE SINGERS und den LEMMONBABIES.

I’m  instrumentalist, playing bass. With you, dear Stella, I have played a few times, which gave me a lot of fun. My passion and my challenge has always been not only to interpret or produce music, but to compose it as well. Of course that had led to songwriting at a young age. In the 1980s people were sought who not only played an instrument, but also looked a little bit beyond the horizon and thought about how a song is structured. That then made the producer. And I was lucky enough to have produced INA DETER and very successfully IDEAL and just THE DOCTORS. I was even the only West producer who was allowed to produce in the former GDR. I worked with the local top band SILLY and produced their legendary record Battalion d’amour. But I also produced other musicians, like the LASSIE SINGERS and the LEMMONBABIES.

Eine tolle Band. Diane Weigmann ist bis heute eine großartige Songwriterin. Mitte der 90iger Jahre schlug bei mir etwas durch das aus meiner Kindheit kam. Bis ich von zu Hause abgehauen war, durfte ich nur klassische Musik hören. Einerseits hatte ich ein wenig die Songstrukturen satt, a-b, a-b, vielleicht noch einen c Teil, dann wieder b oder vielleicht noch einen Refrain, so dass ich bei mir dachte Musik auch anders komponieren zu können. Als ich das tat, führte das zwangsläufig zur Filmmusik.

A great band. Diane Weigmann is still a great songwriter. In the mid-90s, something came to my mind that came from my childhood. Until I left home, I was only allowed to listen to classical music. On the one hand, I was a little tired of the song structures, a-b, a-b, maybe a c part, then again b or maybe a chorus, so that I thought I could compose music differently. When I did that, it inevitably led to film music.

Du hattest ja sogar eine Hollywood Produktion?

You even had a Hollywood production?

Eine amerikanische Produktion, mehrere sogar. Einmal eine TV-Serie, die eine amerikanisch-kanadische Coproduktion war. Der Produzent sass zwar in Los Angeles, aber Hollywood, das sind nur die ganz großen Studios. Dann folgte ein Kinofilm mit Kirsten Dunst, die natürlich zu den Hollywood Schauspielerinnen gehört und ein weiterer, noch größerer Kinofilm mit Daniel Craig. Das war allerdings vor seiner Zeit als James Bond und im übrigen auch eine europäische Produktion.

An American production, several even. Once a TV series that was an American-Canadian coproduction. The producer sat in Los Angeles, but Hollywood, these are just the big studios. Then followed a movie with Kirsten Dunst, who of course belongs to the Hollywood actresses and another, even bigger movie with Daniel Craig. That was before his time as James Bond and incidentally also a European production.

Ist das Komponieren von Filmmusik nach wie vor Deine Leidenschaft, oder könntest Du Dir auch vorstellen, wieder etwas ganz anderes zu machen?

Is composing film music still your passion, or could you imagine doing something completely different again?

Das sind große Herausforderungen Filmmusik, Orchestermusik und immer noch Songs zu schreiben. Man kann ja nie sagen man habe es geschafft oder alles erreicht, es bleibt ein Fass ohne Boden. Manchmal hat man das Gefühl etwas tolles geschrieben zu haben. Beim nächsten Mal beginnt man jedoch wieder bei Null an und glaubt, es nicht schaffen zu können. Man schafft es doch, aber dann ist es im Rückblick vielleicht doch nicht so gut, oder sogar besser als das vorherige. Das gilt sowohl für Lieder als auch für Filmmusik und die Orchestermusiken, die ich manchmal schreibe. Letztere werden allerdings in Russland aufgeführt. Bei allem ist es immer eine große Herausforderung, die ich in keinster Weise gemeistert habe.

These are big challenges in film music, orchestral music and still writing songs. You can never say you’ve made it or achieved everything, it remains a bottomless pit. Sometimes you feel like you have written something great. However, next time you start from scratch and think you can not do it. You can do it, but in retrospect it may not be so good, or even better than the previous one. This applies to songs as well as film music and the orchestral music that I sometimes write. The latter, however, are listed in Russia. It’s always a big challenge for me, and I have not mastered it in any way.

Nein! Dann wird das Leben ja langweilig! Jetzt muss man dazu sagen, das einzige was von den drei Dingen bezahlt wird, die Filmmusik ist. Da sieht die Herausforderung auch ein bisschen anders aus. Beim künstlerischen Arbeiten geht man normalerweise davon aus, dass der Künstler Selbstverwirklichung erlangt. Der Maler stellt dar, was er es als Person sieht und wird dann fertig, wenn er fertig ist. Der Schriftsteller auch. Das Buch wird fertig, wenn er fertig ist und bei einem Songwriter ist es zum Teil auch so, es sei denn die Plattenfirma wartet. Bei der Orchestermusik ist es ebenso, aber bei der Filmmusik ist das grundsätzlich anders. Da hast Du eine Deadline, die sehr tide, sehr bald ist.

No! Then life will be boring! Now you have to say that the only thing paid for by the three things is film music. The challenge looks a bit different as well. In artistic work, one usually assumes that the artist attains self-realization. The painter shows what he sees as a person and then gets ready when he finishes. The writer too. The book will be finished when it’s done and it’s part of it with a songwriter, unless the record company is waiting. It’s the same with orchestral music, but with film music it’s fundamentally different. Since you have a deadline that is very tide, very soon.

Da gibt es auch eine thematische Vorgabe, der man folgen muss.

There is also a thematic specification that must be followed.

Ja, die muss erfüllt werden. Wenn man die einmal nicht erfüllt, fliegt man raus, dann ist man in diesem Business nicht mehr tragbar. Zum zweiten muss man mit Personen darüber kommunizieren, was man macht. Man hat also nicht die komplette künstlerische Freiheit. Es gibt einen Regisseur/Regisseurin, einen Produzenten/Produzentin, einen Redakteur/Redakteurin und alle haben eine Meinung dazu, wie die Musik zu sein hat. Und da ist dann Schluss mit der Selbstverwirklichung, bzw., da ist es nur noch 50 Prozent Selbstverwirklichung, manchmal auch nur 30 Prozent.

Yes, it has to be fulfilled. If you do not fulfill them once, you will be thrown out and you will not be bearable in this business anymore. Second, you have to communicate with people about what you do. So you do not have the complete artistic freedom. There’s a director, a producer, an editor and everyone has an opinion on what the music is like. And then there is an end to the self-realization, or, there is only 50 percent self-realization, sometimes only 30 percent.
