Dear Katharina, how do you get from Paris to Berlin?

Erstens hat mich das Leben einfach hierhin geführt und Berlin war meine Wahl, weil ich immer eine grüne Stadt mit vielen Bäumen, jedoch eine Weltstadt für mich wollte. Berlin empfindet sich selbst immer noch ein bisschen als Stiefmütterchen in einer Ecke, aber das stimmt gar nicht. Man spricht doch sehr viel von Berlin und alle Welt zieht nach Berlin. Man schaut danach was hier passiert, vor allem in der kreativen Szene. Und da ist Berlin in aller Munde. Ich habe Berlin gewählt weil es hier noch Platz gibt, sich auszudrücken.

First of all, life just brought me here and Berlin was my choice because I always wanted a green city with many trees, but a cosmopolitan city for me. Berlin still feels a bit like a pansy in a corner, but that’s not true. There is a lot of talk about Berlin and everybody is moving to Berlin. You look at what happens here, especially in the creative scene. And Berlin is on everyone’s lips. I chose Berlin because there is still room here to express myself.

Ich bin in München geboren und komme aus Frankreich.

I was born in Munich and come from France.

Wie wird man Hutmacherin? Wann war der Moment, in dem Du Dir gesagt hast, das ist es!

How does one become a milliner? When was the moment in which you said that’s it!

Ich trage seit meinem 11. Lebensjahr Hüte. Meine Tante brachte mir Hüte aus London mit und die habe ich aufgesetzt und nie wieder abgesetzt. Das ganze Dorf, ein kleines bayrisches Dorf wo Fuchs und Hase sich Gute Nacht sagen, hatte über mich gelacht aber ich sagte: „Die trage ich jetzt.“ Das hat natürlich meine Persönlichkeit kreiert.

I’ve been wearing hats since I was 11 years old. My aunt brought me hats from London and I put them on and never dropped them off. The whole village, a small Bavarian village where fox and rabbit say goodnight, had laughed at me but I said, „I’m wearing them now.“ That of course created my personality.

Und das war der direkte Weg zur Hutmacherin oder gab es Umwege?

And that was the direct way to the milliner or were there detours?

Direkt war da gar nichts. Ich bin zunächst einmal in der Welt umhergereist. Ich war in sehr vielen Ländern. Vor 25 Jahren hatte ich mich dann entschlossen Hüte zu machen, also meine Leidenschaft zum Beruf zu machen. Meine Ausbildung habe ich in Montreal absolviert und von dort aus ging es dann nach Paris.

There was nothing directly there. First of all, I traveled around the world. I have been to many countries. 25 years ago I decided to make hats, so to turn my passion into a job. I completed my training in Montreal and from there I went to Paris.

Hattest Du in Paris auch ein eigenes Geschäft?

Did you have your own shop in Paris as well?

Ja, ich hatte zuerst eines im 14. Arrondissement, dann eines in Saint-Germain-des-Prés und später auch einen Showroom. Na ja und dann kam ich auf Umwegen über die Schweiz nach Berlin.

Yes, I first had one in the 14th arrondissement, then one in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and later a showroom. Well, then I came via detour and via Switzerland to Berlin.

Wie unterscheidet sich Berlin von Paris?

How is Berlin different from Paris?

Da unterscheidet sich alles. In Paris ist die Mode einfach schon sehr etabliert. Dass man sich schön machen will und dafür Geld ausgibt, vor allem für schöne Stoffe oder besondere Schnitte, auch für die Accessoires, das ist dort kein Thema. Paris ist aber sehr Label orientiert und es gibt kaum noch Platz für Neuankömmlinge. In Berlin ist das komplett umgekehrt. Ich höre hier oft den Satz: „Ich bin ja eher sportlich angezogen“, obwohl da überhaupt kein Sport möglich ist bei der Dame und sie auch sicherlich keinen treibt. Der nächste Satz ist: „Ich möchte etwas tragen, das zu allem passt“, das heißt dann schwarz mit Schwarz. Ich muss dann immer gut erklären, dass Schwarz eine Farbe ist und überhaupt nicht zu Schwarz passt, weil es verschiedene Schwärzen gibt, dass es auf die Materialien ankommt, auf den Sitz, auf die Ausführung. Dass Mode die Persönlichkeit unterstreicht, die Individualität, dass man durch seine Kleidung spricht und dass man Farbe in den Alltag bringen sollte. Ich bin sogar auf einen Berg geklettert und habe Ohrringe getragen. Das war genial.

Everything is different. In Paris, the fashion is already very well established. That you want to make yourself beautiful and spend money on it, especially for beautiful fabrics or special cuts, even for the accessories, that is not an issue there. Paris is very label oriented and there is hardly any room for newcomers. In Berlin, this is completely reversed. I often hear the phrase „I’m dressed rather sporty“, although there is no sport at all with the lady and she certainly does not drive any. The next sentence is: „I want to wear something that suits everything“, that means black with black. I always have to explain well that black is a color and does not even go with black, because there are different blacks, that it depends on the materials, on the seat, on the execution. That fashion underlines the personality, the individuality, that one speaks through his clothes and that one should bring color into everyday life. I even climbed a mountain and wore earrings. That was awesome.

Ich habe auf einem Segelboot gelebt und habe lange Röcke getragen. Mit denen bin ich sogar ins Dingi geklettert und zum Duschen an Land gerudert.

I lived on a sailboat and wore long skirts. With those I even climbed into the dinghy and rowed to shower on land.

Das geht alles. Ich habe immer und überall das getragen, worauf ich Lust hatte.

That’s all possible. I have always and everywhere worn what I felt like.

Denkst Du, dass Berlin für Dich die richtige Stadt ist?

Do you think that Berlin is the right city for you?

Ich bekomme hier sehr gutes Feedback. Auf dem Victress Award habe ich einen Hut als Preis für die Tombola zur Verfügung gestellt, wie Du weißt und ich denke, hier ist noch was zu machen, das ist mein Terrain. Die Deutschen sind ja trotz allem ein sehr schönheitsliebendes Volk, sie haben dafür ein sehr feines Gefühl, eine hohe Sensibilität.

I get very good feedback here. At the Victress Award, I donated a hat as a prize for the raffle, as you know, and I think there’s still some work to do here, that’s my terrain. Despite everything, the Germans are a very beauty-loving people, they have a very fine feeling, a high sensitivity.

Ich halte die Franzosen für sensibler, was das ästhetische Empfinden betrifft. Dort ist doch alles auf Ästhetik ausgerichtet. Allerdings habe ich Hoffnung für Berlin auch, dass Berlin mal eine Modemetropole wird. Eine wilde und vielfältige Modestadt. Nun bist Du hier im schönen Charlottenburg. Möchtest Du hierbleiben und könnte es Dich auch noch mal nach Mitte ziehen?

I think the French are more sensitive to the aesthetic sense. Everything there is geared towards aesthetics. However, I also have hope for Berlin that Berlin will become a fashion metropolis. A wild and diverse fashion city. Now you are here in beautiful Charlottenburg. Would you like to stay here and could you go to Mitte again?

Es ist ein bisschen zu früh, um das zu sagen. Natürlich kenne ich Mitte und auch andere Stadtteile, jetzt ist aber Charlottenburg gut für mich. Hier befindet sich das Schloss in der Nähe, es ist grün, angenehm und um Hüte zu kaufen, müssen sich die Frauen immer deplatzieren. Ob sie nun nach Mitte kommen oder nach Charlottenburg, ich denke, das spielt keine Rolle. Hier habe ich meinen kleinen Garten, meine Hüte sehe ich, wie in einer Pflanzenwelt die ihre Blüten zeigt, man kann draußen sitzen und in Mitte wäre das, glaube ich, nicht möglich.

It’s a bit too early to say that. Of course I know Mitte and other parts of the city, but now Charlottenburg is good for me. Here is the castle nearby, it is green, pleasant and to buy hats, the women always have to misplace themselves. Whether they come to Mitte or to Charlottenburg, I think that does not matter. Here I have my little garden, my hats I see, as in a plant world that shows its flowers, you can sit outside and in the middle that would not be possible, I think.

Charlottenburg hat etwas sehr Gediegenes, man ist entspannt und ich finde, Du und Deine Hüte passen wunderbar hierhin. Vielen Dank für das schöne Gespräch.
