Liebe Malina. Warum wird man Modedesignerin, wie kommt man auf die Idee, in den heutigen Zeiten, in denen alles so schwierig ist?
Dear Malina. Why do you become a fashion designer, how do you get the idea in today’s times when everything is so difficult?
Man braucht auf jeden Fall einen Ansporn. Mein Ansporn war ganz klar die Nachhaltigkeit, die hatte ich auch im Studium schon sehr früh für mich entdeckt. Das war für mich ausschlaggebend in dieser Branche zu arbeiten.
You definitely need an incentive. My motivation was clearly sustainability, which I discovered very early on when I was studying. It was crucial for me to work in this industry.
Das heißt Nachhaltigkeit in der Produktion?
Does that mean sustainability in production?
Nicht nur. Es gibt 3 Säulen der Nachhaltigkeit, Soziales, Wirtschaftlichkeit und Umwelt natürlich. Das bezieht sich auf den Umgang mit Angestellten, mit der Produktionsstätte und mit den Materialien.
Not only. There are 3 pillars of sustainability, social issues, economy and the environment, of course. This relates to the handling of employees, the production facility and the materials.
Auch auf die giftfreie Verarbeitung der Stoffe?
Also on the non-toxic processing of the substances?
Genau. Ich arbeite sehr viel mit GOTS zertifizierten Stoffen, GOTS steht für Global Organic Textiles, das heißt, die Stoffe haben keine Chemikalien und sie werden unter einwandfreien sozialen Bedingungen produziert, oder mit KBA oder KBT Materialien. KBA bedeutet aus kontrolliert biologischem Anbau und KBT steht für kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung, was z.B. die Wolle angeht. Ich arbeite aber auch sehr gerne mit recycelten Stoffen, Polyester, das aus PET Flaschen angefertigt wurde und auch ganz innovativen Materialien wie der Appleskin, ein Stoff, der aus Äpfeln produziert wird. Mir ist es wichtig, nicht dieses Bio- oder Öko-Image zu transportieren, sondern das Nachhaltige-Image. Ich betone die Nachhaltigkeit, denn man assoziiert mit dem Öko-Image das langweilige Bio Leinenhemd und nachhaltige Mode muss nicht langweilig sein. Das Image hat sich auf dem Modemarkt, Gott sei Dank, in den letzten Jahren geändert und ich möchte mit Gallery Malina meinen Pionierbeitrag leisten.
I agree. I work a lot with GOTS certified fabrics, GOTS stands for Global Organic Textiles, which means that the fabrics have no chemicals and they are produced under perfect social conditions, or with KBA or KBT materials. KBA means from organic farming and KBT stands for organic animal farming, which e.g. the wool concerns. But I also like to work with recycled fabrics, polyester made from PET bottles and also very innovative materials like Appleskin, a fabric made from apples. It is important to me not to convey this organic or eco image, but the sustainable image. I emphasize sustainability, because you associate the boring organic linen shirt with sustainable image and sustainable fashion doesn’t have to be boring. Thankfully, the image on the fashion market has changed in recent years and I want to make my pioneering contribution with Gallery Malina.
Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass das alles ziemlich kostspielig ist.
I can imagine that it’s all pretty expensive.
Es ist natürlich kostenintensiver, wozu in meinem Fall noch hinzukommt, dass ich nicht die großen Margen fahre, die ein mittelständisches oder großes Unternehmen fahren kann. Viele Modelle fertige ich in einigen Größen und dann werden sie auf Anfrage für den Endkunden auf Mass angefertigt. Oft ist es so, dass man 5 Größen hat und doch etwas nicht passt. Die Kunden, die zu mir kommen, nehmen sich die Zeit und haben auch das Budget, um das zu finanzieren.
Of course, it is more cost-intensive, and in my case there is also the fact that I don’t drive the large margins that a medium-sized or large company can drive. I manufacture many models in several sizes and then they are made to measure for the end customer on request. It is often the case that you have 5 sizes and yet something does not fit. The customers who come to me take the time and also have the budget to finance it.
Du gehst aber auch Kooperationen mit anderen Menschen ein, beispielsweise machst Du auch Ausstellungen in Deiner Galerie.
But you also enter into cooperations with other people, for example you also make exhibitions in your gallery.
Mir ist der interdisziplinäre Austausch sehr wichtig, insbesondere mit der Kunst. Das hat damit zu tun, dass ich außer Modedesign auch Kunstgeschichte studiert habe. Ich lasse mich gerne von Ausstellungen inspirieren, inszeniere aber auch gerne Ausstellungen. Außerdem arbeite ich mit Schuh – und Accessoire Designern, die meine Kollektion ergänzen, auch im avantgardistischen und im 3 – D Bereich. Ich liebe diese Zusammenarbeit. Früher, und heute manchmal leider immer noch, gab es ein Ellbogendenken in der Modebranche, aber ich sehe die Tendenz dahingehend, dass es sich insofern ändert, dass man Zusammenarbeiten schafft.
Interdisciplinary exchange is very important to me, especially with art. This has to do with the fact that I also studied art history in addition to fashion design. I like to be inspired by exhibitions, but I also like to stage exhibitions. I also work with shoe and accessory designers who complement my collection, also in the avant-garde and in the 3-D area. I love this collaboration. In the past, and unfortunately sometimes still today, there was an elbow thinking in the fashion industry, but I see the tendency that it changes in that you create collaborations.
Da sollten wir ohnehin wieder hin, mehr zusammen zu machen. Bist Du denn optimistisch, was die Modewelt betrifft?
We should go back there anyway to do more together. Are you optimistic about the fashion world?
Ja und Nein. Ich muss ganz ehrlich sagen, optimistisch insofern, dass man eine starke Entwicklung spürt. Es bewegt sich was, aber irgendwie auch nicht. Die Modebranche befindet sich an einem Wendepunkt, wo sie sich neu erfinden muss, was eine Art Stillstand hervorruft. Man merkt auch bei den großen Marken, dass sich in puncto Innovation nicht viel tut, auch durch die Überproduktion. Es gab schon immer große Produktionen, aber in dieser Menge und in diesen kurzen Zeitabständen nicht, man ist mittlerweile bei 12 Kollektionen im Jahr oder noch mehr. Das kam erst in den letzten Jahren auf.
Yes and no. I have to honestly say, optimistic in that you can feel a strong development. Something is moving, but somehow not. The fashion industry is at a turning point where it has to reinvent itself, causing a kind of standstill. One also notices with the big brands that not much is happening in terms of innovation, also due to the overproduction. There have always been large productions, but not in this quantity and in such short intervals, you are now at 12 collections a year or even more. That only came up in recent years.
Das kann man ja gar nicht mehr bewerkstelligen und dabei noch kreativ sein.
You can no longer do that and still be creative.
Genau. Daran merkt man, dass die Mode selber ein bisschen aus der Mode gekommen ist, aber man sieht eben auch die Möglichkeit, dass etwas Neues kommen kann. Ich glaube, wir stehen gerade an einem Punkt, an dem es sich wendet.
I agree. You can tell that fashion itself has gone a bit out of style, but you also see the possibility that something new can come. I think we are at a point where it is turning.
Abschließende Frage: Wie stehst Du denn zu den Billigkaufhäusern wie H&M oder C&A und was es sonst so alles gibt?
Final question: How do you feel about the cheap department stores like H&M or C&A and what else is there?
Da sollte man auf keinen Fall einkaufen. Die Sache ist, nach außen bemühen die sich natürlich auch um das Image der Nachhaltigkeit. H&M hat jetzt zum Beispiel die Concious Collection, aber das Problem ist eigentlich, der Endverbraucher weiß trotzdem nicht, was er da kauft. Letztendlich hat man nur 30 % Biobaumwoll Anteile, wenn überhaupt, und sie werden nach wie vor in den gleichen Produktionsstätten hergestellt. Da hat sich gar nichts geändert und es bedarf noch einer großen Aufklärungsarbeit.
Under no circumstances should you shop there. The thing is, of course they also strive for the image of sustainability. For example, H&M now has the Concious Collection, but the problem is actually, the end user still doesn’t know what they’re buying. Ultimately, you only have 30%, if any, organic cotton, and they are still made in the same factories. Nothing has changed there and a great deal of information is still needed.

Es gibt einfach so viele Bezeichnungen. Das eine heißt Concious Collection, das andere Grüne Mode, aber keiner kann sich etwas Konkretes darunter vorstellen. Es gibt so viele Aspekte. Einer sagt, er produziert in Deutschland oder Europa, hat aber keine nachhaltigen Stoffe. Andere machen nachhaltige Stoffe, produzieren aber in Billiglohnländern. Der Endkunde weiß nicht, wo der Schwerpunkt liegt, und kauft sich dann mehr oder weniger einfach ein gutes Gefühl. Man kann am Preis schon erkennen, ob ein Kleidungsstück Qualität hat oder nicht.
There are just so many labels. One is called Concious Collection, the other is Green Fashion, but nobody can imagine anything concrete about it. There are so many aspects. Some say they produce in Germany or Europe, but have no sustainable substances. Others make sustainable fabrics, but produce in low-wage countries. The end customer does not know where the focus is, and then more or less simply buys a good feeling. You can tell from the price whether a piece of clothing has quality or not.
