Du bist bildende Künstlerin und Modedesignerin. Ich habe erfahren dürfen, dass viele Deiner Kunstobjekte in die Mode einfließen. Wie machst Du das?

You are a visual artist and fashion designer. I was able to find out that many of your art objects flow into fashion. How you do that?

Als ich mit der Mode anfing, suchte ich nach Motiven und das waren Dinge, die ich oft in meiner Kunst verwende, zum Beispiel Spielzeug, Schmetterlinge oder Strukturen von Rost oder Wänden. Ich spiele auch gerne mit Lebensmitteln. Ich hatte eine Fotoserie mit Pfannkuchen gemacht, und entwarf dazu einen Rock in Form eines Pfannkuchens. Natürlich bin ich stets auf der Suche nach Motiven und Inspirationen. Mein Schwerpunkt als Modedesignerin ist, Stoffe zu entwerfen. Diese lasse ich dann in kleiner Auflage in St. Petersburg drucken. Ich mache kleine Kollektionen, die sehr exklusiv aber auch sehr tragbar sind.

When I started fashion, I was looking for motifs and those were things that I often use in my art, for example toys, butterflies or structures from rust or walls. I also like to play with food. I had made a series of photos with pancakes and designed a skirt in the shape of a pancake. Of course, I am always looking for motifs and inspiration. My main focus as a fashion designer is to design fabrics. I then have these printed in small numbers in St. Petersburg. I make small collections that are very exclusive but also very wearable.

In Deinen Bildern habe ich gesehen, dass Du schon immer Kleider gemalt hast, lange bevor Du Kleider gemacht hast.

In your paintings I saw that you always painted dresses, long before you made them.

Das Kleid als Thema war immer sehr präsent. Ich musste für mich definieren, was ein Kleid ist. Ist es eine Abgrenzung nach außen, ist es ein Schutzschild oder ein Zuhause? Um diese Gedanken zu verarbeiten und zu klären, entstehen Serien von jeweils 10 – 15 Stück. Weißt Du, als ich mit der Kunst aufgehört hatte, obwohl man ja nie wirklich mit Kunst aufhören kann, überlegte ich, was ich sonst noch gerne machen wollte. Und das war eben Mode. Und ich erinnerte mich an meine gemalten Kleider und dachte, das passt.

The dress as a theme was always very present. I had to define for myself what a dress is. Is it a demarcation from the outside, is it a protective shield or a home? In order to process and clarify these thoughts, series of 10-15 pieces each are created. You know, when I quit art, although you can never really quit art, I thought about what else I wanted to do. And that was just fashion. And I remembered my painted dresses and thought that’s fine.

Aus Deiner heutigen Sicht als Designerin, was bedeutet das Kleid denn, Abgrenzung oder Zuhause?

From your point of view as a designer today, what does the dress mean, separation or home?

Es ist eine Art der Kommunikation. Als Modedesignerin muss ich anders an das Thema herangehen. Das Kleid ist nicht mehr ein Kunstobjekt, sondern eines, das getragen wird. Da ist es wichtig, wen das Kleidungsstück anspricht, wie andere darauf reagieren. Das ist ein sehr entscheidender Aspekt in der Mode.

It’s a way of communication. As a fashion designer, I have to approach the subject differently. The dress is no longer an object of art, but one that is worn. It is important who the garment speaks to and how others react to it. This is a very important aspect of fashion.

Liegt es auch an der Trägerin, ob das Kleid ein Zuhause oder eine Abgrenzung ist?

Is it also up to the wearer whether the dress is a home or a demarcation?

Ich denke, es liegt an beiden, an der Trägerin wie an der Designerin. Wenn die Chemie stimmt, dann ist es eine gelungene Kreation.

I think it’s up to both of them, the wearer as well as the designer. If the chemistry is right, then it is a successful creation.

Ich bin sehr verliebt in Dein Buch. Darüber zu reden, würde den Rahmen sprengen, aber es gibt natürlich einige Fotos die ich gemacht habe, und nähere Informationen auf Deiner Webseite. Jetzt möchte ich auf Deine persönliche Geschichte zu sprechen kommen. Du bist aus Russland und Deine Kunst ist sehr geprägt von dieser Zeit. Wie würdest Du den Unterschied der Kulturen mit Blick auf die Mode, beschreiben?

I am very in love with your book. Talking about it would go beyond the scope, but of course there are some photos I took and more information on your website. Now I would like to talk about your personal story. You are from Russia and your art is very much influenced by that time. How would you describe the difference between cultures when it comes to fashion?

Oh, das wäre ein Thema für eine Vorlesung! Ich denke, es liegt schon an der Persönlichkeit jedes Einzelnen, wovon man sich inspirieren lässt. Als ich nach Deutschland kam, trug ich nur schwarz. Es war praktisch und entsprach meiner Ästethik. Später, als ich mich mit Mode beschäftigte, entdeckte ich die vielen Facetten der Mode und der Farben. Ich musste dann experimentieren wie die Farben bei mir wirken, oder die Schnitte und unterschiedlichen Stile. In Russland war die Mode trist und grau. Aber es gab durchaus auch schräge Vögel, die auf der Straße sofort auffielen. Meistens hatten sie aber ihre Mode selber kreiert. Zu den ersten Modedesignern, die in Russland „geboren“ wurden, gehörte Wjatscheslaw Michailowitsch Saizew (Slawa Saizew), der sich stark an der russischen Folklore orientierte. Das wäre nicht meine Welt. Wie ich schon sagte, es hängt immer von der jeweiligen Person ab.

Oh, that would be a topic for a lecture! I think it’s up to the personality of each individual what is inspiring. When I came to Germany, I only wore black. It was practical and in line with my aesthetics. Later, when I got into fashion, I discovered the many facets of fashion and colors. I then had to experiment with how the colors worked for me, or the cuts and different styles. In Russia, fashion was dreary and gray. But there were also weird birds that were immediately noticeable on the street. Most of them, however,  had created their fashion by their own. One of the first fashion designers to be „born“ in Russia was Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Saizew (Slawa Saizew), who was strongly oriented towards Russian folklore. That wouldn’t be my world. As I said, it always depends on the person.

Ich denke oft über die Wertigkeit der Dinge nach. Wenn in einem Land, in dem alles trist und grau ist, jemand erscheint, der schillernd und bunt daherkommt, ist das gewiss etwas ganz Besonderes. Hier hingegen, wo das Schillernde und Bunte zum kommerziellen Normalfall geworden ist, gib es überhaupt noch eine Möglichkeit sich von der Masse abzuheben, speziell als Designer?

I often think about the value of things. When someone appears in a country where everything is dreary and gray, who comes across as dazzling and colorful, it is certainly something very special. Here, however, where the dazzling and colorful has become the commercial norm, is there still an opportunity to stand out from the crowd, especially as a designer?

Ich finde, das ist gar nicht so schwer. Wenn man als Designer seiner Fantasie freien Lauf lässt, ist alles wunderbar. Schwer hingegen ist, Trägerinnen für deine Sachen zu finden. Welche Kategorie Menschen kommen für deine Entwürfe infrage? Viele Menschen, auch hier im Westen, kaufen die herkömmlichen Marken von der Stange und wollen, um Gottes Willen, nicht auffallen.

I think it’s not that difficult at all. As a designer, when you let your imagination run wild, everything is wonderful. However, it is difficult to find carriers for your things. Which category of people are suitable for your designs? Many people, also here in the West, buy the conventional brands off the shelf and, for God’s sake, don’t want to attract attention.

Nicht auffallen, obwohl ja jeder auffallen will.

Do not attract attention, although everyone wants to be noticed.

Das ist der Widerspruch. Aber viele trauen sich nicht. Wenn sie ein großes Label tragen, reicht es für die meisten, sich toll und cool zu fühlen. Ich finde, das ist es aber nicht. Es gilt, die eigene Individualität und den eigenen Stil zu entwickeln. Dazu braucht es keine teuren Marken. Man muss schauen, wie man die Sachen miteinander kombiniert, und das ist dann wieder eine Kunst. Es verlangt nach einer Art Selbsterziehung. Man muss sich mit dem Thema beschäftigen und auseinandersetzen und dann sähen unsere Straßen auch etwas bunter aus.

That is the contradiction. But many do not dare. If they have a big label, most of them just feel great and cool. I don’t think that’s it. It is important to develop your own individuality and style. You don’t need expensive brands for this. You have to see how you combine things, and that’s an art again. It calls for some kind of self-education. You have to deal with the topic and to get familiar with it, and then our streets would look a little more colorful.

Kunst wird im Allgemeinen sehr hoch angesehen, Mode hingegen eher nicht. Zu der Zeit, als Du ausschließlich bildende Künstlerin warst, hast Du die Mode auch so gesehen?

Art is generally highly regarded, but fashion is not. At the time when you were exclusively a visual artist, was that how you saw fashion?

Ich habe die Mode und die Haute Couture immer bewundert, z.B bei der PODIUM in Paris. Für mich war das natürlich unerschwinglich. Jetzt weiß ich jedoch, wenn man andere Wege beschreitet, mutig und kreativ ist, braucht niemand ein Haute Couture Kleid um fantastisch auszusehen. Das gilt für jeden.

I have always admired fashion and haute couture, e.g. at PODIUM in Paris. For me, of course, that was unaffordable. But now I know that if you go other ways, are brave and creative, nobody needs a haute couture dress to look fantastic. That goes for everyone.
