Woher kommt Deine Liebe zu Hüten, liebe Susanne?

Where does your love of hats come from, dear Susanne?

Das Handwerk ist der Schlüssel zur Liebe. Es hätte auch etwas anderes werden können, aber nun sind es die Hüte geworden. Ich liebe es, mit den Händen zu arbeiten, das hat etwas Bildhauerisches, weil es dreidimensional ist. Zur Herstellung eines Hutes braucht man sehr viele unterschiedliche Materialien, und dann arbeitet man mit Wasser, teilweise mit Dreck, mit Farbstoffen – es ist also wirklich Handarbeit.

The craft is the key to love. It could have been something else, but now it has become the hats. I love working with my hands, there’s something sculptural about it because it’s three-dimensional. To make a hat you need a lot of different materials, and then you work with water, sometimes with dirt, with dyes – so it’s really handwork.

Das bedeutet, die Liebe gilt eher dem Handwerk als der Mode?

That means the love is more for the craft than for fashion?

Absolut.

Absolutely.

Wie findest Du die Inspiration für Deine Kreationen?

How do you find inspiration for your creations?

Es entwickelt sich aus dem Handwerk. Wenn ich ein Material in den Händen halte, überlege ich, was ich damit machen kann. Dann komm die Frage, wie ich das verarbeiten kann und daraus entwickelt sich die Form entweder in die Höhe, in die Breite oder wie auch immer. Es kommt also nicht vom Design, sondern fließt aus meinen Händen.

It develops from the craft. When I hold a material in my hands, I think about what I can do with it. Then comes the question of how I can process it, and from that the form develops either in height, width or whatever. So it doesn’t come from design, it flows from my hands.

Du hättest auch Töpferin werden können.

You could have been a potter, too.

Wahrscheinlich. Aber das finde ich zu langweilig.

Probably. But I find that too boring.

Irgendetwas muss es aber gegeben haben, dass es der Hut wurde.

However, there must have been something that it became the hat.

Am Anfang war es schon Mode. Ich habe eine Damenschneiderlehre gemacht, die ich allerdings abgebrochen habe. Als ich noch jung war, wollte ich natürlich Mode-Designerin werden, bin aber heute froh, diesen Weg nicht gegangen zu sein. Es gibt so viele Mode-Designer. Mit dem, was ich jetzt mache, habe ich ein kleines Alleinstellungsmerkmal. Man hat eine Chance, als Einzelunternehmen zu bestehen, sein eigenes Ding zu machen. Das ist für mich sehr wichtig, obwohl ich mich sehr gut ein- und unterordnen kann. Ich arbeite viel für Film und Theater und die Kostümbildner sind froh, wenn sie mit jemandem arbeiten, der sich nicht auch noch verwirklichen will, sondern einfach macht und erklärt, wie es funktionieren könnte.

In the beginning it was indeed fashion. I did an apprenticeship as a ladies‘ tailor, but I dropped out. When I was young, of course I wanted to be a fashion designer, but today I’m glad I didn’t go that route. There are so many fashion designers. With what I’m doing now, I have a little unique selling point. You have a chance to exist as a sole proprietorship, to do your own thing. That’s very important for me, although I’m very good at blending in and subordinating myself. I do a lot of work for film and theater, and the costume designers are happy to work with someone who doesn’t also want to make it their own, but just does it and explains how it could work.

Wenn Du eine solche Auftragsarbeit übernimmst, kann es passieren, dass Du davorstehst und denkst, das geht gar nicht?

When you take on such a commissioned work, it can happen that you stand in front of it and think, that’s not possible at all?

Ich sage meistens ja. Sofort. Es ist mir egal, ob jemand sagt, so und soviele Hüte in so kurzer Zeit oder irgendetwas Hochkompliziertes will, was zum Beispiel gelötet werden muss, oder wo es einen Unterbau geben muss, erst einmal sage ich ja. Und dann ist es für mich die Herausforderung, das auch zu schaffen. Das ist mein Sport, ein bisschen wie ein Marathon-Lauf. Viele fragen mich, warum machst Du das, warum arbeitest Du so viel, Du musst auch an Dich denken, aber für mich ist es toll, das zu schaffen.

I usually say yes. Immediately. I don’t care if someone says so and so many hats in such a short time or wants something highly complicated that has to be soldered, for example, or where there has to be a substructure, first of all I say yes. And then the challenge for me is to make it work. That’s my sport, a bit like running a marathon. Many people ask me why do you do it, why do you work so much, you also have to think of yourself, but for me it’s great to be able to do it.

Du denkst ja an Dich in diesen Momenten.

You do think of yourself in those moments.

Ja, und ich bin stolz darauf. Ein so kleines Geschäft mit drei oder vier Mitarbeitern, die allerdings jetzt zum Teil krank sind und ich das dann trotzdem schaffe. Dann sitze ich eben manchmal noch bis in die Nacht hinein und freue mich aber immer noch, dass ich es machen kann, dass man auf mich zukommt und zufrieden ist.

Yes, and I am proud of it. Such a small business with three or four employees, some of whom are now sick and I still manage to do it. Then I sometimes sit up into the night and am still happy that I can do it, that people come up to me and are satisfied.

Familienfreundlich klingt das nicht.

That doesn’t sound family-friendly.

Ich habe einen tollen, verständnisvollen Mann, der selber gerne arbeitet. Aber ich mache zwischendurch natürlich auch mal frei.

I have a great, understanding husband who likes to work himself. But I also take time off in between, of course.

Du hast sowohl einen Damen- als auch einen Herren-Salon. Warum hast Du das getrennt?

You have both a women’s and a men’s salon. Why did you separate them?

Das kam aus der Not heraus. Das Stammgeschäft ist der Damen-Salon, das gibt es jetzt seit 24 Jahren. Früher existierte in der Grolmannstrasse ein alt eingesessener Hutladen aus den 50ger Jahren, ein Geschäft, das nur Handel betrieb, also keine eigenen Hüte herstellte, und dort hatten immer die Männer eingekauft. Ich sagte mir, wenn der zumacht, ist meine Zeit gekommen und ich werde versuchen, etwas für Männer zu gestalten. Hinzu kommt, dass ich es für einfacher erachtete, 2 Geschäfte zu haben, denn falls es nicht funktionieren würde, kann ich das eine wieder abstoßen. Möglich war es auch nur, weil mein anderes Geschäft direkt gegenüber ist. Ich kann bei den Herren ein Schild aufhängen mit dem Hinweis, dass geöffnet ist, man mich kurz anrufen kann, und ich rüberkomme. Das funktioniert sehr gut. Früher hatte ich auch hier Herrenhüte, aber der Platz reicht nicht aus. Männer brauchen Platz. Die wollen sehen und kaufen. Das heißt, man muss es sofort in der passenden Größe vorrätig haben, sie warten nicht, und deshalb brauche ich ein Lager. Das ist der Grund, warum ich nun 2 kleine Läden habe.

That came out of necessity. The main business is the ladies‘ salon, which has now existed for 24 years. There used to be an old hat store in Grolmannstrasse from the 1950s, a store that only traded, i.e. didn’t make its own hats, and it was always the men who shopped there. I said to myself, when it closes, my time has come and I will try to create something for men. In addition, I thought it would be easier to have 2 stores, because if it didn’t work out, I could get rid of one. It was also only possible because my other store is right across the street. I can put up a sign at the gentlemen’s saying it’s open, they can give me a quick call, and I’ll come over. That works very well. I used to have men’s hats here too, but there’s not enough room. Men need space. They want to see and buy. That means you have to have it in stock right away in the right size, they don’t wait, and that’s why I need a warehouse. That’s the reason why I have 2 small stores now.

Ich sehe selten Männer, die Hüte tragen, bei den glamourösen Exzentrikern schon häufiger, aber im Straßenbild kaum.

I rarely see men wearing hats, more often among the glamorous eccentrics, but hardly ever in the street scene.

Der Hut hat es nicht einfach, aber in einem Sommer wie diesem ist es leichter, denn alle wollen sich vor der Sonne schützen. Das sind natürlich funktionale Hüte, aber es macht den Sommer zur Saison. Der Winter hingegen ist weggefallen. Es wird nicht mehr so kalt. Es gab vor ungefähr 10 Jahren mal einen sehr kalten Winter, in dem habe ich ganz viele Kappen und Mützen auch mit Fell verkauft, aber in den warmen Wintern kauft niemand, bis auf diejenigen, die immer Hut tragen. Das heißt, in den Sommermonaten muss ich soviel Geld verdienen, dass es für den Rest des Jahres reicht.

The hat does not have it easy, but in a summer like this it is easier, because everyone wants to protect themselves from the sun. Of course, these are functional hats, but it makes the summer season. Winter, on the other hand, has gone away. It doesn’t get as cold anymore. There was once a very cold winter about 10 years ago, in which I sold quite a lot of caps and hats, even with fur, but in the warm winters no one buys, except for those who always wear hats. This means that in the summer months I have to earn enough money to last the rest of the year.

Der Hut ist für mich eher ein Accessoire und weniger funktional.

The hat is more of an accessory for me and less functional.

Ich könnte nicht nur von den modischen Hüten leben. Ich muss, wie schon gesagt, auch für den Film und das Theater arbeiten, was ich zwar gerne mache, aber ich muss auch. Du trägst ja häufig Hut, aber viele sind so scheu. Da fehlt es an Selbstbewusstsein, sie haben Angst aufzufallen.

I could not live only from the fashionable hats. As I said, I also have to work for the film and theater, which I love to do, but I also have to. You wear hats a lot, but many are so shy. There’s a lack of self-confidence, they’re afraid to stand out.

Man ist nur einmal auf dieser Welt, und dann soll man nicht auffallen?

You’re only in this world once, and then you’re not supposed to stand out?

Es ist langweilig, weil sich alle gleich anziehen, und zur Funktionskleidung passt eben kein Hut. Ich selbst trage auch wenig Hut, weil ich die meiste Zeit in der Werkstatt verbringe, aber wenn ich zu Veranstaltungen gehe, trage ich Hut. Außerdem probiere ich den ganzen Tag Hüte auf, denn bevor ich ihn nicht an mir ausprobiert habe, geht er nicht raus. Das heißt, ich bin quasi den ganzen Tag behütet.

It’s boring because everyone dresses the same, and a hat just doesn’t go with functional clothing. I don’t wear a hat much myself because I spend most of my time in the workshop, but when I go to events, I wear a hat. I also try on hats all day, because until I try it on myself, it doesn’t go out. That means I’m kind of hatted all day.
