Liebe Josephine. Beginnen wir doch mal mit Deinen Anfängen. Warum hast Du Modedesign studiert?

Dear Josephine. Let’s start with your beginnings. Why did you study fashion design?

Das ist eine wirklich sehr gute Frage. Ich immer ein kreativer Mensch und suchte etwas, wo ich das ausleben konnte.

That’s really a very good question. I’ve always been a creative person and was looking for something where I could live that out.

Das hätte aber auch Handwerk, also auch Tischlern sein können.

But that could have been handicrafts, so also carpentry.

Hätte auch Handwerk sein können, wobei Modedesign in meinen Augen auch ein Handwerk ist. Ich bin aber auch sicherlich durch meine Mutter geprägt und an dieses Thema herangeführt worden. Auf jeden Fall fand ich dieses Thema spannend und bewarb mich für den Studiengang, zu dem ich auch angenommen wurde. Da war ich dann auch auf einmal erfolgreich, ganz im Gegensatz zur Schule. Ich war eine grottenschlechte Schülerin, war sitzen geblieben und hatte auch keine Freunde, also Leute, die mich wirklich interessierten. In meiner Schulzeit war ich Außenseiterin. Nicht, dass ich gemobt wurde, aber es war egal, ob ich da war oder nicht.

Could also have been a craft, although fashion design is also a craft in my eyes. But I was certainly also influenced by my mother and introduced to this subject. In any case, I found this topic exciting and applied for the course of study, to which I was also accepted. Then I was also successful all of a sudden, in contrast to school. I was a lousy student, had been left behind and had no friends, i.e. people who really interested me. In my school days I was an outsider. Not that I was bullied, but it didn’t matter whether I was there or not.

Und wie lange hast Du als Designerin gearbeitet?

And how long have you worked as a designer?

Nach der Ausbildung ging ich erst einmal für zwei Jahre ins Ausland, nach Barcelona und für ein Jahr nach Rom. Dort machte ich jeweils Praktika, um Erfahrung zu sammeln. Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass die dreijährige Ausbildung allein nicht ausreichten, etwas zu starten oder mich zu bewerben. Diese Auslandsaufenthalte brachten mir viel und als ich dann zurück nach Deutschland kam, machte ich mich selbstständig, eröffnete mein Geschäft und gründete ein Label. Das war 2005, nachdem ich noch einige Coachings zum Thema Selbstständigkeit absolviert hatte. Das lief auch einige Jahre ganz gut. Mein Geschäft hatte ich bis 2009 und dann lernte ich meinen jetztigen Mann kennen, der in der Dekobranche arbeitet. Das klang sehr spannend.

After my training, I first went abroad for two years, to Barcelona and for one year to Rome. There I did internships in each case to gain experience. I had the feeling that the three years of training alone were not enough to start something or to apply for jobs. These stays abroad brought me a lot and when I came back to Germany, I started my own business and founded a label. That was in 2005, after I had taken some coaching courses on self-employment. That went quite well for a few years. I had my business until 2009 and then I met my now husband, who works in the decoration industry. That sounded very exciting.

Ihr macht Raumausstattung für Events, richtig?

You do interior design for events, right?

Wir nennen es Raumgestaltung für Film, Fernsehen, Theater und Veranstaltungen.

We call it interior design for film, television, theater and events.

Und jetzt sitze ich Dir in einem Studio gegenüber, das ganz neu, ganz frisch eröffnet ist und man sogar noch die Farbe in der Küche riechen kann. Was macht Ihr hier? Was bietet Ihr hier an?

And now I’m sitting across from you in a studio that is brand new, brand freshly opened, and you can even still smell the paint in the kitchen. What do you do here? What do you offer here?

Wir haben gleich nebenan unsere Dekowerkstatt, die wir mit zwei weiteren Leuten teilen. Von unserem Vermieter wurden uns diese Räumlichkeiten angeboten. Wir sahen uns die Räume an und uns war klar, Gewerberäume zu bezahlbaren Preisen, zumal in dieser Gegend, gibt es nicht, wir müssen die nehmen. Dann erst überlegten wir, was wir daraus machen wollten. Wir ließen uns zwei Tage Zeit, trafen uns dann erneut und hatten witzigerweise alle vier eine ganz ähnliche Idee, nämlich ein Studio zu bauen, das man temporär vermieten kann.

We have our decoration workshop right next door, which we share with two other people. We were offered these premises by our landlord. We looked at the rooms and it was clear to us, commercial space at affordable prices, especially in this area, there is not, we have to take. Only then did we think about what we wanted to do with it. We took two days, then met again and, funnily enough, all four of us had a very similar idea, namely to build a studio that could be rented out temporarily.

Man kann den Raum also für Shootings mieten?

So you can rent the space for shootings?

Für Videoproduktionen z.B. für Instagrammer, Spotify, Tic-Toc Videos, was auch immer.

For video productions e.g. for Instagrammer, Spotify, Tic-Toc videos, whatever.

Ihr dreht aber nicht selbst oder bietet Ihr auch das an?

But you do not shoot yourself or do you also offer that?

Wir selbst drehen nicht, aber zwei unserer Kompagnons sind Beleuchter, das heißt, Licht, Ton, Deko und Raumgestaltung bieten wir natürlich an. Unsere Kunden kommen aber mit ihrer eigenen Kamera und Technik. Ein Grundset an Licht ist auf jeden Fall vorhanden.

We do not shoot ourselves, but two of our companions are lighting technicians, which means that we offer lighting, sound, decoration and room design, of course. But our customers come with their own camera and technology. A basic set of light is available in any case.

Ich habe im vorderen Raum Schminktische gesehen. Es ist hübsch, dass man sich hier auch hinsetzen kann, um sich zu stylen. Was ist denn Eure Vision für die Zukunft?

I saw makeup tables in the front room. It’s nice that you can sit down here to style yourself, too. What is your vision for the future?

Die Vision ist, unseren Kunden für jedes Konzept die passende Lösung zu bieten, denn unsere Werkstatt ist direkt nebenan. Der Kunde kann kommen, sich etwas wünschen, wir bauen es hier ein, dann wird gedreht oder geshootet und dann kommt der Nächste.

The vision is to offer our customers the right solution for every concept, because our workshop is right next door. The customer can come, wish for something, we build it here, then we shoot or shoot and then the next one comes.

Welche Art Kunden habt Ihr?

What kind of customers do you have?

Wir sind ja noch sehr frisch am Start, aber Fotografen, Videokünstler, Influencer. Derzeit arbeiten wir mit einer Company, die Tic-Toc Videos produziert und Influencer mit ihren jeweiligen Produkten promotet. Wir möchten aber auch Veranstaltungen machen, haben mit einer Kunstausstellung eröffnet, und zwar mit dem Künstler, der unsere Fassade bemalt hat. Mein Traum ist es, Kunst und Kultur ebenso einen Raum zu geben wie kommerziellen Veranstaltungen.

We are still very fresh at the start, but photographers, videographers, influencers. We are currently working with a company that produces Tic-Toc videos and promotes influencers with their respective products. But we also want to do events, opened with an art exhibition, with the artist who painted our facade. My dream is to give art and culture a space as much as commercial events.
